Letter 1. Ephesus

Rev 2:1-7

1 To the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things said he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the middle of the seven golden candlesticks;

 Candlesticks = Menorah’s

 Stars = Angels who administer the 7 churches.

2-7 I know your works, and your labor, and your patience, and how you can not bear them which are evil: and you have tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars: And have borne, and have patience, and for my name's sake have labored, and have not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against you, because you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you are fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come to you quickly, and will remove your candlestick out of his place, except you repent But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate. He that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit said to the churches; To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the middle of the paradise of God.

Ephesus was a city build around the temple of Artemis also known as Dianna, Aeginaea, Alphaea, Locheia, Cynthia, light bringer, Cybele and Phoebe who was the goddess of hunt, animals, infants, child birth, fertility, girls, dance, song, disease, plague and sudden death. During Paul’s time the Artemis worship in Ephesus mostly involved lots of prostitution and orgies.

This temple is known as one of the 7 wonders of the world

The early church labored intensely to bring the Gospel to a pagan world

Compliments

-They hated the Nicolaitans

Nicolaitans is comprised of two Greek words

Nico -> Nicao = conquer. This word is related to Nike the Greek god of victory.

Laitan -> Laos = Common people.

Church leaders acting like gods.

Many scholars think the Nicolaitans refers to a sect that taught the best way to understand sin is to indulge in it.

- They worked hard.  -  They didn’t tolerate the wicked.

- They tested all teachings like Bereans.

Criticism

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.”

Ephesus was so busy with their works they lost focus on their groom, Jesus.

 Adam left his first love God for Eve.

Advice

“Remember the height from which you have fallen!”,

Just like Adam they fell from a great relationship with Jesus (as a bride). Ephesus did very well when supervised by John. But when John was exiled on Patmos they left their first love and fell from great height

Reward

To him that overcomes will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the middle of the paradise of God.

This is another reference to Adam who had access to the Tree of Life.
